wondering if this laptop can handle traktor?
Posted on: 24.09.2012 by Terese Marceau
basically for reasons i wont bore you with new laptops give me migraines, im sensitive to LED backlit screens. My 2007 Macbook has a CCFL lit screen and i can look at it for hours on end, however it can barely run traktor with any effects. ive obviously been to Drs, had eyes tested, used antiglare screens etc..doesnt work..

I need an upgrade but really don't want to fork out on a new mac I can barely look at or need to use an external monitor to look at as I obviously cant do that at gigs.
However I found a friend who barely uses a 17" Macbook pro, model A1261 (2008). im pretty sure its one of the last models before all screens turned to LED backlit, so should be easy on my eyes and i'm believeing to make him an offer...however I obviously cant try out traktor on it before buying . I wondered if anyone in the know thought it would run Traktor plus sample decks/effects etc pretty well?

these are the specs i found for the laptop...really appreciate any help here...

LED backlight giving you migraines... That's quite interesting

MacBook Pro may not exactly be what you seek for, as loads of them seem to be suspectible of GPU and keyboard and screen failures... But not each and every model - choose wisely, but ask on mac community s, not here...
hey, thx for your tips... i want to stick with mac as i moved for the foreseeable future to spain and all my installation discs etc are in storage in the uk...wanna just set up a new mac from time machine so its exactly the same as the last one, rather than have to re install everything again.

well everything is made with LED backlit screens now, so mac or pc would be the same, it wont be easy on my eyes. i can only buy something that is not made anymore...theres a small percentage of mac users who have sensitive eyes to any new mac (when I say "new", i mean from 2008/9 onwards), they'll never do anything about it as we're probably not even 1% of their total market and no one would go back to CCFL screens, but yeah theres quite a few interesting discussions on the mac community s.

Its not so bad now, ive got used to it at my job...now i just get headaches and eye strain whereas when i started that job it was a strong headache, motion sickness, and really irritable eyes. to be honest I had a good experience with that first MBP I bought in 2007..its only in 2012, 5 years later, that things started going wrong...failed logic board but it only cost about 300 euros to fix (apple wanted 600! lol)

Just to give you an example, I have 4GB ram, and I'm running TP2, with the Kontrol S2. Unless I increase my latency to 17ms, my load meter will clip, and even then it depends on which version. 2.1.1 is really the most stable for me. Even with basic two track mixing in 2.5.1 with 17ms latency, the load meter still clips.
RAM doesn't matter for latency. It's all about CPU, soundcard and the quality of your drivers.

4gb should be perfectly fine for the foreseeable future, certainly until you buy your next laptop.

thanks for the useful answers guys...I should have made it clear from the beginning that i couldn't put the latency right down on my laptop and run traktor well...running the program at a normal level is not an issue with the 2007 mac i have, but as soon as i put latency down to a level low enough to scratch with it cant handle it. the mac i could buy will no doubt run traktor better than mine currently so depending on getting a good price I should buy it. thanks again

thats cool, i can only believe that you dont lower the latency too much? Id rather have mine very low as I scratch a lot..more important to me than effects for example...sorry I should have mentioned this at the beginning!if i have the latency at a low enough rate that it reacts similar to real vinyl then i can barely run an effect.

Sadly Mac resale prices are usualy ridiculously high compared to similarly old technology.

I run Traktor on a 2009 Macbook Air with only 2gig of RAM. However it was barely tolerable till I added an SSD. Once I added the SSD it feels faster then my Dell laptop I got last year.

hey Ksandvik, yeah I know memory wouldnt cost a lot, and theres the option to upgrade to SSD but I dont want to pay a lot to upgrade an old comp, otherwise i can probably upgrade the 2007 mbp I've got, as I recently replaced the logic board and hard drive after they both failed. I cant buy a new one, i cant look at them without getting migraine, that's why i'm hopeful this old version might run traktor ok as the processor (2.5ghz) is much more powerful than my current one (2.16ghz)

I use a 2009 macbook unibody. This is before the wacked the word pro on there. It flys. I had 4GB of RAM though and as long as I did a cold reboot and didn't have anything running like web browsers/email/skype I never noticed a thing. I've now got 8GB and I often just launch traktor whenever. You'd be fine I'd say. The more RAM the better though.

+1 on the upgraded memory... also the 17 inch models have dedicated graphics so that means more cpu for audio , you can also look into DSP cards if you need extra processing power for audio

If you get a good price on the 2008 one, then get it and add another 2Gb of RAM to start with. I'm running Traktor on a 2007 MBP, it was just gathering dust in my studio and I'm taking it to gigs so if it dies there I don't mind. Now, I'm running 2.1.3 on it so far, not 2.5.1. The analyze phase is not so fast but then again I analyze tracks before they are played.

Just make sure that the 2008 price is not over-the-top, whoever sells them should not exactly expect a big resale value from that kind of an old laptop.
