I noticed that there was quite a bit of discussion on the 2013 DMC on the community . But I didn't see to much on Thre3 Styles, I honestly love it. Some of the Tone Play and phrase matching is creative. I feel like this is an awesome way to showcase not only scratching (not DMC quality but great nonetheless) but a great culture and history of DJing. What do you guys believe?

Master of the Mix isn't really a real competition by any standard... can't really compare it to an actual battle. People are clearly chosen for many reasons other than DJ skill (personality, image, popularity, etc). It's hardly a case where the "decent of the pack got picked" when some of the most skilled/accomplished DJs got an early boot as well with no consideration. Can't take MotM seriously, just a DJ themed TV show with it's own underlying motives.

Haha thanks homie! Got a lot more stuff I need to put up... I have about 10-12 minutes of routines from the past year that I haven't put up yet. Appeciate the kind words though

I imagine many of the contestants are very solid, but these sets say otherwise. Just seem rather weak. I am not sure really what it takes to qualify for RB3 but I would really love to see a turntablist get up there and cut it up crazy. DJCity has a Bedroom video edition and they are sick so I don't under stand how you have regional qualifiers at this level, specifically at New York.
I believe a lot of the weakness in early rounds of RB3 (and even probably takes away from the high levels as a result), is the flaw in RB3's method of choosing competitors. It's not an open competition where anyone can submit and the best are picked. At the regional level in most places it's invite only, and DJs are picked purely based on popularity/draw. They even run social media analysis on some DJs to make decisions on whether they should be in. Some places give a sort of false impression that they're open entry because you can submit a video to RB3 for consideration, but I've been told usually 75% of the spots a filled and the video submissions are just to fill up any empty spots. So a lot of the regional battles are ridiculously weak with only 1-2 guys who have much of a clue in order to have a chance of winning... some places maybe not even 1 or 2. Combine this with the fact that some regionals are judged by complete clowns who aren't even DJs, you get some pretty doo-doo DJs going through. However at least in Canada they seemed to fix that problem this year by flying 3 qualified judges to every regional. I've judged a couple local ones in previous years where I was the only DJ, or there was 1-2 other DJs but they weren't even on the level of half of the competitors. Some of the stuff I saw behind the scenes made me want to puke and die cuz it's so disrespectful to the competitors who put a lot of time and effort into their routines just for judges to go outside and talk with people during their set, or listen to 3 songs and put a big X through their score sheet.

On an organizational level RB3 does have some improving to do, but this year they did seem to step it up, at least in Canada. It's sort of the typical B.S. you get with a corporate-run DJ battle where most of the people up top don't know much about DJing. Just gotta hope for the best, and hope there's someone up there with a clue and some pull. It is nice to have that $$ injection into the scene so you get some nicer line ups than usual and prizes are a little heftier than they might be otherwise, but just gotta take it with a grain of salt.

I was at the Red Bull Thre3style on the Thursday evening when Trentino won his heat to go onto the finals and he blew me away. His song selection isn't amazing, but was better than 2 of the 3 other DJs that evening , and his technical skill basically launched him up to first place IMO.

Having said that...A trak came on to perform after all the competitors and blew each of them away within the first 3 minutes lol

I didnt mean they are on the same level, just merely the process of being picked for the VH1 show and threestyle seemed similar as you stated on post above; its about how big or popular you are. And yes, the judges they be picking at regionals have me scratching my head sometimes too.

A little bit of fanboy here, Vekked your set for 2012 online DMC is one of my favorites.

Anyways I really feel like some of the qualifiers really lacked the skill. For example:

Yea, that's exactly it. As soon as some DJs start figuring out that the general formula to making a winning routine = spend the most time making your routine, it'll become a different animal. There should be zero improvisation in a routine unless something goes wrong and you have to recover. And yea I spend an entire year on routines to get 6 minutes of material for DMC, and although RB3 isn't as technically intensive, I believe you need 30 mins of material total for the finals (2 x 15) which should easily take the full year of working nearly every day on it.

Agree.

Unfortunately, a lot of peole coming into DJ'ing see it as this mainly "improvised" (and I use that term VERY carefully), form of expression.

There seems to be a lack of awareness (possibly even here at DJTT) of the sheer amount of preparation that goes into any type of technical routine.

Some guys get into it for the exciting, improvisded, expressive form of DJ'ing. Why not? That's the fun part, right?

But to get REALLY good, you also need to put in the (sometimes) boring hours, of research, preparation, practice (Vekked can tell us how many hours it takes to NAIL a DMC standard routine!), and perfection.

A-Trak is a perfect example of technical skill, and preparation, and sheer party rock-a-bility!

I like the idea of a more mix-focussed DJ battle. I believe it's important to focus on all aspects of DJing. I believe it'd be nice to have 1 more style of competition with even longer set lengths because RB3 is still quite suited for fast-paced/fairly technical DJing although not to the extreme of DMC... so 1 more longer competition might be nice to to round things out for the majority of DJs.

I don't believe most people are taking advantage of the format as much as they could yet though. I believe Four Color Zack was still the best at it so far. There's like 75% of the finalists don't really have much of a shot, and then there's 4 to 6 guys who "get" it more than the others. But even still not many of those guys are really pushing any boundaries. There's a lot of safe sets, and similar ideas from set to set. There's not all that much that an average to decent DJ should be able to do themselves as long as they put in a couple months preparation. I hope someone comes in and sets the bar really high. Not that people weren't good this year, but nobody really blew it out of the water.

See I felt the opposite of that, I thought Byte's set deserved the win. Shinto's was not nearly as solid in terms of mixing or song selection. But its all off opinion
