AUDIO 8 or AUDIO 6?
Posted on: 05.12.2012 by
My friend is willing to sell me his Audio 8 for $200, but I don't know if I should just get the newer Audio 6 for $250. Any advice?

One of the things I've noticed though is that there seems to be some driver issues with it, I've had various issues with it on windows and multiple instances of OS X. Most of the time its totally fine, but it but very occasionally it will start distorting really badly. This is fixed by simply unplugging it and plugging it back in but obviously that isn't so good in a gig situation.

i've never had audio issues at my house but in a loud environment the power adaptor/powered usb is a must...at least for me...and i've been using DVS since 2005...i've never owned or ran on a mac though... and I never experienced any major issues until using NI products... i've been using traktor since 2007

i use the audio6 all the time and the thing is bullet proof

awesomely loud and punchy output (even without the power adapter - i never brought mine out for gigs!)

i use it on osx 10.7.5 on USB 3.0 ports (macbook pro 2012) so im quite certain there are no driver issues at all as long as its mac

oh and the direct thru works even without the power adapter, but you gotta keep the usb port connected

if the usb port is disconnected the thru is disturbed

by default when you plug in the audio 6 into ur laptop its gonna be in direct thru mode, you need to enable scratch control or output before the direct thru gets cut off

no problems!

Thanks, Russell. I was waiting for an answer on that software question lol.

Go for the audio 8, those extra channels come in handy when you want to route your sound around in different ways. Which you will, even though you might not know it yet.

As for your friend de-registering his Traktor software from NI, I would highly recommend that he does. It sounds like he's trying to 'share' access to his account with you to use the product, which I can only picture headaches from that point on out. Tell him if he's serious about selling you the product you want him to go through the proper NI channels -> http://www.native-instruments.com/kn...uments+product and have the serial number removed from his account to be used for your own.

Good question regarding software updates, I believe you are able to update any NI software upon registering the product in your own account. I could be wrong... Anyone have the details regarding this?

Direct Thru only needs an external power supply when it's not connected to a computer, because, well, it needs a power supply.

I'm very satisfied with my Audio 6 nowadays. I've had some troubles, but iirc that always came down to either a bad driver, or bad latency settings. I've been problem-free for pretty long now. Then again, the Audio 8 is probably just as good.

I have an audio 6, never had any problems and never had to plug it in, all USB powered

I have another question. My friend says he'll just give me his online account access for Traktor Scratch. I don't believe this will work, as I'm pretty sure he has to unregister the product for me to use it. I had a similar problem earlier this year when I purchased an S2 on eBay. I could be wrong. I'm also not sure if I'll still be eligible for Traktor upgrades once the serial code is transferred over to me. Can anyone clarify?

Audio 6 owners were having issues w/ the sound distorting badly if they werent plugged in. Might have to be plugged in at all times

I believe you need to use the power supply for the Audio6 when using "Direct-Thru", where as the Audio8 runs solely of the USB power.

It's just something to consider, as you need to worry about one more thing you need to plug in.

Well, they should both be pretty much the same sound quality wise. The audio 8 has the advantage of an extra channel and the audio 6 has direct-thru, this allows the signal from the cdj/turntable to go through the soundcard to the mixer without being interupted, good for playing vinyl or cd's).
If you wont use the direct-thru ability then you may be better just getting the audio 8, though I assume you won't get a warranty with that.

His Audio 8 comes with Traktor Scratch Pro 2, btw.
