What do you do to be original?
What do you do to be original? Posted on: 18.12.2012 by Rea Kilbarger I believe what sets a good DJ apart from the rest is the ability to maintain some level of originality. Whether it's mixing your own mashups, spinning original productions, or whatever else you might do (hell, you might even just be amazing with effects chains); what are YOU doing to be original?Personally, I use acapellas and mix my own mashups. On a mix I'm working on now (which I'll be posting in a little bit) I use acapellas from Dada Life, Chris Brown (don't hate me for it), Sander Van Doorn, and Above & Beyond. Also, I'll implement my own songs once I feel they're ready. What about yous all? | |

Precious Pequignot 22.12.2012 | imma quote from a-trak's fb "As a DJ you might believe your biggest songs in a set are the ones the crowd wants to hear, but the ones they remember are the surprises." which i found very true |

I spend a LOT of time digging for tracks that I believe fit a certain sound I really like and that people might not know of... and I like sharing that with people. I'm not really into fancy tricks that much. I like playing music the way I like to listen to music. Always on the works for becoming technically stronger, but I believe a lot of tricks take away from the overall danceablility of a mix. It's a complicated thing really, but I believe storytelling with the music you select is the most important aspect of things. Getting that message, emotion, feeling across while manipulating music. Doing that from your soul? That's going to make anyone original. Playing the same shit you hear everywhere and everyone else is playing? Wake the fuck up. |
Celestine Porebski 21.12.2012 | To be honest, I find this whole obsession some people seem to have with "being original" extremely boring (and a bit annoying) |
Linda Chavda 21.12.2012 | >95% of people aren't original though... next! |
Rita Debar 21.12.2012 | Just be yourself. Always. |
Linda Chavda 20.12.2012 | Yup, its a nice box though, like the tents on HP |

Linda Chavda 20.12.2012 | I try and believe outside of the box without actually physically leaving the box... https://soundcloud.com/computersandblues/sets/elliot-adamson-dance-is-dead if I write something and can't put it into a specific genre Im either shit at genres or on to something. |
gabriel ortiz 20.12.2012 | I scream a lot, wear my underwear outside my pants, and punch myself in the face repeatedly. |
Tesha Freudenstein 21.12.2012 | nobody in my area really plays what i do. among the DJs in my age it's all techno/tech-house (has deep roots in my city because it's the home of "stammheim"), recently brostep/electro-house and a little DnB so it's pretty easy to be different stragely nobody dares to touch tech and psy-trance. afraid of 140 i suppose. |
Reginia Tramble 20.12.2012 | Take request, throw them in the fuckin trash caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan |
Janyce Henningson 20.12.2012 | I wear a big mouse head |
Ulysses Okelly 20.12.2012 | i press sync |
Linda Chavda 20.12.2012 | I copy my idols and use pre-mixed cds |
Palma Hanslip 20.12.2012 | Mostly just make edits of tracks all the time. Usually tracks that work really well but the crowd are getting sick hearing them so i chop em up and edit them to give them a new lease of life on the floor. I play a weekly residency that i've held for nearly 3 years so i know what pretty much works on the floor of the club. So nothing too fancy but still enough to stand out from all the locals apart from my fellow resident as we work together. |

Lilliana Perris 18.12.2012 | Well, I play Psytrance mainly and to keep myself original....I play the way I do. No one else that I know of, plays like I do. I have always been a busy body in the DJ box and hate standing around for the end of the track, in order to mix in the next. However, Psytrance is not the genre you can play 2mins of one track and 2 mins of another, chopping and changing tracks. So I kind of remix them now by Key Coding and playing in key firstly, then layer my tracks so that they never sound exactly like the original. As I have been playing Psy for so long (Vinyls...CD...and now Digital) I really understand its flow, especially Full-on evening time sorta stuff. No one else really uses controllers (except for the S4) but even they are just way to tempted to jam as many tracks as they can after each other. I tend to focus on playing the track to its fullest, but adding and remixing it on the spot. I don't believe is gadgets or gizmo's or masks etc. I want to crowd to fuck out to my music and the way I twist it. Music....is the focus. |
18.12.2012 | I believe, at least in my case, it comes down to track selection. I try and play hidden gems that still maintain a cohesiveness to the dancefloor crowd. When I get that positive feedback, that thumbs up, it just pushes me to dig further into that musical haystack. In the end, you are your own biggest critic because 95% of the time, no one knows what the fuck you're doing up there anyway - they just wanna dance to some good shit. Oh, and in the middle of my sets, I usually start throwing my shit at people like a gorilla. 60% of the time, it works every time. |
Sherrell Dargenio 18.12.2012 | I just have fun and try not to copy anyone's style. There's always somebody out there that's similar to you unless you're completely ground breaking. |
