Reply to Animated avatars?

Hello @ all, DJTT admins,
I've seen some users with animated avatars and though "oh neat, i should make one" - so I did. However the settings section doesn't seem to like them. Am I doing something wrong? Did the community policy change at some point and some users with animated avatars got grandfathered in?
