Time you should wait after sending a song to labels

How long do you guys normally wait after shopping your track to labels before you decide to just release it as a free download yourself.

Labels prefer that your submissions be unreleased so how long are you willing to just have your track sit there collecting dust?

Not to mention labels get bombed with submissions, did they not reply because they didn't like your track or did they not get to it yet.
