How did you guys get your first gig?
How did you guys get your first gig? Posted on: 04.05.2013 by Fred Meager I am a beginner DJ and I have been bedroom DJing for the past year and I believe I am decent enough to start playing for public. The problem is I don't know where to start to get my first gig, so I am wondering, how/where/when did you get your first gig? I'm only 16, is it even possible to play in clubs? Probably not haha.. Also, the only gear I have is my laptop, Traktor S2, and TouchOSC on my iPhone. I havent looked into speakers or anything because I just use my computer speakers, what would I need to start? Anyways, yeah! How did you get your first gig? anddd What styles of music do you spin? Also while I'm at it, tips for beginner Ableton live user? I have started trying to make songs myself with Ableton. I preordered the Arturia Minilab, and meanwhile Im just using my keyboard and drawing notes in | |

Latoria Kavulich 07.05.2013 | Rock up with a demo. Introduce yourself. Be confident. Everyone has to do it |
Nia Amed 07.05.2013 | I have a couple good friends in a shoegazy/punky rock band and they thought it would be cool to do their CD release (also doubling as a Halloween party) by having me set up after them and get all the drunk folks dancing. The evening
went death metal band, punk band, my friends band....then me. It was kind of a fun challenge since most of the crowd were metalheads and hipsters with razor thin musical sensibilities and had no idea what to make of the breaks and techno I threw at them. Nor did they realize that "oonce oonce" jokes dont really make sense when the Apache break is playing. But they were drunk so they all danced anyway. On the other hand it was nice knowing I could experiment and throw down old tried and true tracks that an electronic oriented audience might find dated or have grown bored of years ago. I get to relive that experience at the end of this month at their next CD release party. |
Noriko Lebowitz 04.05.2013 | I'm 15 and do Teen Nights at popular clubs in my area. -- Talk to people. Meet people who are in the position you want to be in and get to know them and how they got there. Casually tell them how you're a DJ as well(Not when you first meet!) and ask them if they'd like to hear your stuff. If they say no, just shrug it off and try at another time. These are the people you want to get to know. If all else fails, talk to a local bar or club in your area about starting your own evening . |
Joette Mccarthur 04.05.2013 | Facebook! find friends that dj or friends wanting to have a house party and go from there. Share your mixes with local promoters. |
Melinda Shick 05.05.2013 | All about knowing the right people. My first gig stories are a bit different, my first gig was when i was 11 playing ska and metal to a beer tent full of bikers because a DJ didn't turn up, then when i was 15 i was playing in a biker/rock bar because my family were involved with it, probably a bit of a special case though! For you, i'd just spend time building your own musical knowledge and do some production as well, then when you're old enough to be out and about, network like crazy! It's even easier nowdays to network with the internet, especially if you have productions under your belt you could jump straight in to clubs as soon as you're of age. |
Renate Mayeur 04.05.2013 | a lot of talking can help. |
Michaele Mehn 04.05.2013 | I believe the best way to enter the scene is to organize a event. And it's hella fun ! |
Jorge Furber 04.05.2013 | I created it? I' m currently approaching my local bar to create my own Tech House evening , once a month. And I believe it will work. If you can't find a scene, create one. |
Linda Chavda 04.05.2013 | Production work>DJs and Promoters take interest>Gig |
Joesph Kasian 04.05.2013 | I got my first gig by speaking to a local promoter and asking how I could get a set in his club - he said to give him a demo CD showing my styles and range of sounds, it took me over a year to get the right gear
after that as I didn't want to attempt a set on 1210s after learning to mix on Numarks. When I finally got the set I took some cds along to give out, met some more promoters and carried on until I started gigging on a regular basis. I also worked hard on community s/message boards making sure people know what I was doing and where I was going to be, promoters love all that. |
