Which should I get first?
Posted on: 09.05.2013 by Dylan Kockler
I'm really gonna try to make a long story short

I'll be getting Ableton Live 9 Standard and plan to be purchasing both the Maschine Mk2 and the Novation Launchkeys 49

My question to you is which should I buy first? The Maschine or the Launchkeys?

Also I dont have any prior piano skills. Should I get the 49 key or a 25 key midi keyboard?

If you answered no to those questions (which is perfectly fine) I would just familiarize yourself with Ableton first, before you purchase any kind of controller. If you've never used Ableton before, you wont have an idea of what kind of controller you will want. You may believe you know what you want, but you wont know till you're atleast somewhat familiar with it. If you really want some keys to play some chords/melodies/drums whatever, just get something basic in the meantime like an Akai LPK25 or something
Alright I understand, I'll look into getting the LPK25 (because I am interested in using ekys to play a little) before I jump to buying any controllers. I appreciate the advice and input you're giving me, sorry for asking a lot of questions I'm really just trying to learn/understand.

LPK25 is awful. It's way too small.

You can really do a TON with Ableton without a keyboard.

If you don't have a musical background, it'll take you at least 3 months to build that up before you start producing.

Get the Push...

It'll cover the Maschine and Launchkey.

You can us launchkey with maschine's software. If you're getting all of those eventually, I would start with maschine. You can use maschine's hardware with ableton too.

Launchkey would be useless if you don't have ableton yet.

Launchkeys bruv. This way you can take time to learn more about getting in touch with your music.

Get the Launchkeys 49 first. I have a 32 key, and it's big enough. I'm not a piano player either, but 25 seems a bit too small. If you are planning to carry it around then get the 25 key if not... go with the 49. Which ever you get it doesn't matter, just preference and for convenience.

You may want to develop some certain piano skills and then it's always good to have the opportunity to play wide.
You would get it before the Maschine Mk2?

Why not go for the launchpad instead of the launchkey? It's cheaper, it can be used to play traditionally once you get your head around the key locations and patterns, and it can easily act as a basic mixer and clip trigger-er.
