To buy a XDJ-R1 or a pair of used CDJ 900s?
To buy a XDJ-R1 or a pair of used CDJ 900s? Posted on: 06.06.2013 by Grace Gatica Since the XDJ-R1 release i have been considering scrapping the idea of buying a pair of used Cdj 900s for $1800 australian. Expecting the XDJ to be $1300 here on release so if im spending this much money i really need to be sure. Does anyone believe that 900 mk2 will be released this year or at all? | |

I'm a member of the pioneer community and I believe I've read a bug report about every single thing of the whole rekordbox process. The software made people so angry I met a guy who is doing reverse engineering on the software to make an alternative software that, according to him, will work better than the oficial rekordbox from pioneer. For DJs like me that don't like playing with softwares, using Rekordbox flawlessly is a dream. Sadly, it will not come true in a close future. The instability of Rekordbox made, for the first time, a new CDJ be worse that its ancestor. CDJ-2000 is still the industry standard, and the CDJ-2000Nexus is becoming one of the most found at "Used" sections of DJ stores. According to your signature, you have a CDJ-2000. If I were you I would: First, not sell it. Second, try rekordbox for some time untill a bug appears, and realise it could have happened when you were on a club. |

Audrey Pinda 09.06.2013 | How I've been looking at it is like this: The Pioneer XDJ-R1 is probably the best home/house party setup at it's price. Coming in at around $899 USD, you can't beat that for a CDJ setup. Even a set of used CDJ-800MK2's are about $400 a pop, same with CDJ-400's, and you don't have any of the benefits of the other features. It's all about muscle memory when it comes to mixing. Being comfortable on what you plan on mixing with live. If you can afford CDJ-900's and a mixer, or 2000's, it's going to be the "best" route for you. Just because of that muscle memory. If you aren't renting them out, or aren't making a living off of them, I would say it's almost overkill though compared to the sheer features of the XD-R1. The XDJ-R1 is going to give you the benefit of learning pioneer's setup, but it won't be exactly the same. If I was looking at buying a non-turntable setup for my first set of gear to learn on at home? The XDJ-R1 would be my ONLY choice. As a DJ who has just invested into sound and is working on starting to throw parties? I'd rather have the CDJ-900's or CDJ-2000's as that is the standard in the club, and I'll be inviting other DJ's to use my gear at my evening s, and renting it out to other crews is something that you won't be able to do with an XDJ-R1. It's a different part of the game really. If you are throwing events, buy the CDJ-900's. If you are using this for personal use only, and at home/house parties? The XDJ-R1 is the controller that really beats the pants off all the others. |
Vikki Falkenrath 09.06.2013 | hm, interesting, so it will create a beat grid when you tap... so this gear
is more advanced than a CDJ-2000Nexus, cause not even it can "create" a beat grid without rekordbox. and, considering it really is, how tapping is more precise than choosing the exact moment that the loop should start and end? When I tap on ableton for exemple it gives me diferences of 0.30 to 0.70 bpm....... you should be one hell of a tapper! |
Alphonso Deitchman 09.06.2013 | The loops will be based on the same beat grid as the FX. It makes no sense to do it any other way. If you want to make a loop you just tap out the rhythm for a few beats, then select a loop size and enable it. |
Vikki Falkenrath 09.06.2013 | As far as I know, the TAP button is for the Beat FX.... nothing to do with LOOPs. Considering I'm wrong, please explain, step by step, how to make a simple loop on the XDJ-R1 without using rekordbox. |
Alphonso Deitchman 09.06.2013 | Using the TAP button to get the correct tempo and beat phase seems like a more effective system than using the Loop In/Out buttons manually without Quantize. That way you can be sure the loop will be correct before you enable it. |

Alphonso Deitchman 09.06.2013 | The only valid point you have made is about the short pitch faders. That alone does not make the R1 worse than a pair of CDJ 200s. |

Alphonso Deitchman 09.06.2013 | The only real benefits of the 900's control surface over the R1 are the pitch fader and jog display. They both have dot-matrix screens showing pretty much the same information, other than the very basic mini waveform on the 900. I'm not asking for a huge post, but please just make a few points about why you believe the R1 is worse than a CDJ 200. |

Alphonso Deitchman 09.06.2013 | How is the 900 much better than the R1 without Rekordbox? If you have CDJ 900s it makes no sense at all to use non-Rekordbox media. Loops drifting mean you haven't set your grids properly. I've had problems with the computer app crashing, but exported drives have always worked flawlessly on my 2000s. |

Alphonso Deitchman 08.06.2013 | Pitch faders are a fair point. I'm still not sure what you're getting at about Rekordbox. |

Alphonso Deitchman 08.06.2013 | What makes you believe the R1 significantly different than a pair of CDJs? |

Alphonso Deitchman 08.06.2013 | Both the XDJ R1 and CDJs use the same media. They can both read from CDs, as well as USB sticks prepared with or without Rekordbox. Therefore the stability of Rekordbox should not be a deciding factor. |
Vikki Falkenrath 08.06.2013 | Better buy the cdjs, and use no rekordbox, it will bug at the most critical moment. Just take a look at rekordbox oficial community , 95% of the threads are bug reports. The idea behind it is awsome, but the first time I had a big bug with it I got totally disappointed. |
Gaynell Rydberg 06.06.2013 | I don't believe R1s will be very hard to transition to 900/2000s. They're so similar, main difference between software side. If you can afford the CDJs, I'd definitely go that route. Otherwise XDJ-R1. |

XDJ has hotcues and sampler (How much do you need that) I mainly use hotcues for fast selection where I like to start the mix in of a song, That can be done with memorie points on CDJ900. you can link the CDJ900 with a computer and use Rekordbox from there. XDJ you can use with a iPad and that gives some intresting controls that are not easy or not at all on the CDJ+DJM setup. You could sell the DJM800 and use the money to get the XDJ you would prob not need the DJM anyway as you can add cdj/turntables to the XDJ. The CDJ+DJM setup takes up a lot of space and is heavy to carry around specialy if in a flight case but it's plug and play with Traktor. XDJ not so big much lighter to carry. I would go for XDJ personaly because of size and I need to bring my setup to most clubs/gigs. |
Grace Gatica 06.06.2013 | I already have a DJM 800 so need for a mixer, I can afford 900s just wanted to get peoples opionions on how it stacks up compared to a CDJ DJM package (other than the shitty 350 pack). |
Anissa Perusek 06.06.2013 | If you can afford the 900s, buy them. If you can't, get the XDJ-R1. Are you in the UK? I've seen pre-ordersfor the XDJ here in US for $899 with a couple of 5% off coupons = $850. That's right around the price of one 900. Soooooo... |
Jerica Salava 06.06.2013 | plus you need a mixer. that makes a used CDJ 900 setup twice the price of a new XDJ-R. |
Dannie Dimora 06.06.2013 | Lol are you even asking? In what condition are the 900s? You know what? just buy them xD |
