Need help setting up a djm 600
Posted on: 17.06.2013 by Selma Throop
So yesterday my friends dad let me borrow a djm 600 mixer, and 2x cdj 800s just until i can afford my own gear . I honestly dont really want to use the cdjs. Is there anyway i can connect the djm 600 to my laptop and use it with traktor. This is my first mixer and i am extremely confused. Any help is appreciated.

This is why amps suck.

Get yourself some powered speakers. You can even use an iPod dock, but I wouldn't expect the dynamic range to be decent.

Sounds like the Australian price. One major store had Audio2s for $139 still.. so $119 isn't that bad over here.

Anyway.

That's an unreal first setup, especially for free. Stay away from Traktor as long as possible, you'll be a better DJ in the long run. Learn the basics on the CDJs and you'll find Traktor a lot more rewarding later down the track.

The Numark DJ IO costs around $50, but with that option, you wouldn't really be able to use the CDJ's, you'd have to use the transport controls in the software (with your mouse), and use the mixer controls on the DJM.

If you want to use the CDJ + DJM combo you'd have to use the control CD's and get an audio card like the Audio 4 which allows you to plug both CDJ's into it.

Consider yourself lucky. Most people upgrade to this gear after a few years of DJing. You've got someone generous enough to let you use their precious cdj-babies. You can pay him back by using his gear and learning from this opportunity.
CDJ's are gonna be a harder learning curve but they will give you much more feel and control over the music. Traktor has sync which makes it easier to learn the basics of Djing but I dont see any advantage to pugging the audio through the djm600 if ur not going to buy a soundcard. You could just plug the computer into your speakers. If it were me, I would start making CD's and learn to beat-match on ur cdj's. You have a real, legit, physical DJ setup in front of you. Why not use it?

If I was you I'd get used to the CDJs, they are there, ready to rock so get busy!

In fact, stop reading this post and get mixing right now - have fun!

I wish I'd have been lucky enough to have that setup when I first started! Definitely get used to CDJs.

would it be better to learn how to use the cdjs. or should i do the laptop thing

At the very least you could need something like a Numark DJIO or NI Audio 2. Both these would give you two external decks and allow you to monitor off the mixer. With the Audio 2 the necessary cables are included i believe (2x TRS>RCA)

would i need an external soundcard? what cables would i need.

sure. do you have a soundcard? if not, you can just mix away in internal mode and plug your headphone jack into one of the channels. No cueing possible this way, obviously.
