Gemini G4V or Behringer CMD studio?
Posted on: 16.07.2013 by Sherell Hubiak
I'm looking to purchase a new controller. Which would you go with.... the behringer CMD studio or the Gemini G4V which isnt out yet, but hopefully soon. They are the 2 budget controller i've seen and liked.

I call advanced everything that goes beyond factory map that unit comes layered with. And that 4A seems to have some I.G. effects going on so I'd like to see how did they implement this in layout and still hold of the 4 Deck functionality.

Or they made just 2 decks and use other two channels for effects for each side.

But seriously, I still haven't seen that advanced mapping for the 4A that you have mentioned in one of webinars far as I remember.. Also the DC-1 > MF tsi.

Any videos soon?

And yes, I was referring to CNTRL series. Good to know!
Yeah the CNTRL series vs the G(2/4)V is far and away completely different beasts inside and out.
I didn't say we are using ALL the possible modifiers, just saying we made it an option for the super tweaker.

I'm more than happy to put together an effects-heavy Traktor mapping for the G4V/G2V, but there's no way I'd even attempt something like that without a unit to work with lol. Pay for the return shipping cost and I'll even send it back to you in one piece when I'm finished :P

Not attempting to create mapping for this controller but some ideas are coming. Don't really like that jog wheels for that side shapes...

Knowing some Gemini controllers I wouldn't be surprised if they implement some HID functions making those controls impossible to map in other software that's not coming in the box.

Like 45 min max. Add all transport and FX for A and C at one side of controller then duplicate device and remap it for B and D - for me personally the double focus solution overcome the A/C B/D switching limitation.

Already see how I should map this controller but I wonder if the firmware handle shift or page selector via MIDI channels... That could change game a bit. I like how 4A does it in firmware just like that and if G4V supports only flat mappings the 4A got much more mapping potential.

I agree that minority of CMD users would not go for a bit advanced functionality right out of box, but being fresh give this controllers some time to evolve and you'll see the results. You could tell the same for BCD, Mixtrack and other entry level gear - check out the mappings at Traktorbible site and you'll see what I mean.

But again, I understand your policy that CMD is looking only toward beginner who will find some basic control surface more that enough to start swimming. See them after they beat the boss on first level of that video game

No, the mapping I did for the 4a has no instant grat anything. The purpose of stock mappings like that is to provide the user with a starting point for understanding the product. Doing something like using decks C and D for effects control is a fun idea for the 1% of people who would understand it, but it would alienate the other 99% of users that bought it as their first controller and are just learning. it's like how the first level of a video game is usually just there to teach you how to play that video game.

That said, it wouldn't be hard to implement some modifier based funkiness into a 4a mapping while keeping the 4 deck functionality, because the deck switching is accomplished in the firmware and not with a modifier. So if you (for instance) used the DEL button to set a modifier, you could drive 4 different modifiers (or set 4 values within a single modifier).

Hi Guys,

You're referring to our early controllers the Gemini CNTRL series and the original Firstmix.
Beyond that any new products such as CDJ-700 or CDMP-7000 or Firstmix pro contain 100% midi and can be mapped any which way you want. We are actually working on 2 sweet Traktor mappings. 1 containing a true 4 deck set up and the other with 2+2 remix decks.

We are open to having even more mappings supplied with things like instant gratification style things on the the pads. The 4 buttons below the pads each have a shift and are used as modifiers so technically you can map the pads to do 8 different layers.

I have the midi table available if someone wants to take a jab at mapping without the actual unit .

Thanks,
Gemini

Haha, I map everything from scratch rather than using templates. If Traktor supported an actual scripting language rather than just clicking to add functions, it'd be a piece of cake and MUCH better.

The Gemini is twice the RRP of the Behringer - but looks much better imo.

Looks a bit shaky already in the pics, Gemini/10
