How did you choose a genre to mix?
Posted on: 26.08.2013 by Bernard Pulizzi
Hello all, I thought I would open a question thread as I'm very interested to hear other's opinions on the topic:

When you first started mixing/djing, how did you decide on the genre you wanted to mix primarily? Did you ever have a few different styles that you wanted to specialise in, but felt you were forced to go down one direction, rather than pursue both?

My example is that I love the techno style of DJs such as Loco Dice, but I also love bouncier, bass driven house/techno (like that of the Dirtybird crew). I'm just not sure I'll be able to combine the two into my sets and will probably have to look deeper and decide on one if I want to get shows hosted by certain labels etc. I love all electronic music, from dubstep and Drum and Bass to garage and house, but my interests lay mainly in house and techno!

I would love to hear your opinions!

Not necessarily, sometimes it does sound good despite the keys. Just listen and see what sounds good to you, that's the most important thing.

I know that's not your point anyway, and I know I have low mileage as a DJ, but I was posting this as a general question, not one aimed to help me!
Nothing wrong with it at all my man, I'm the EXACT same way, lol

It also seems that you're way too worried about your "maybe future dj life" right now before you're actually a few hundred hours deep into some actual practice. Having fun should be your #1 priority... Get the gear, and work on the type of show you'd actually like to create.. If you have no act, then there's nobody that's going to pay any attention to you anyways.

Very very true! I do like that the genres are somewhat guidelines however, in that house, techno and everything in between are all very mixable, along with styles such as dnb, dubstep and trap

You can mix any genre you like. It depends upon your taste of music.

I was reading an article the other day where a big, superstar DJ said to play the music you love. If you love the music you're playing, it will come across in your DJing. So, collect the stuff you love now and since it's two genres/sub genres, mix those and get the technical details of mixing down. You can always branch into other stuff as you find and collect songs from other genres/sub genres you.

I grew up in Chicago and lived in Milwaukee, so house, funky house, disco tunes gone house are what I love. But I've found myself liking some tech house, deep house, nu disco and some of the progressive stuff out there. I also love trance because I play the piano and love the chord progressions. I pretty much detest dubstep and most electro house, but you might find some of that stuff in one of my playlists.

I didn't choose techno as my genre, it chose me. Awakenings came on my path, and it was love from both sides from the beginning. It was this special evening ...

In retrospect, it's surprising I took up DJing 2 whole years after.

I may eventually put it up on my Mixcloud. I recorded it using Traktor and because of recording limitations it exists as a 3 hour and a 1.25 hour recording that need to be merged. I'll let you know whenever I post it up.
