Reply to USB to MIDI latency?

Total newb here. I would really like to buy a MIDI fighter(or any SANWA style controller) to tackle my hardware samplers/synths but I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with latency running a USB to MIDI cable into theirs. I understand it is USB powered & also I'm wondering if anyone has used any clever alternatives to this roadblock.
I've found a thread where people have tried to use the MIDI fighter on their Maschine but I leave my computer at home. Seen too many DJ's die on stage from cpu issues etc. Any help for a total stooge would be fantastic.
