Selectress Iriela got her start in 1996 as producer and host of “Rockers” on 88.9FM WERS in Boston. Having mom- come from a family of musicians and artists, it only made sense for Iriela (Valerie Parker) to embrace the music are-world. It was not long before Iriela established herself through her rare selections, on-air style and personality as one of the first female disc jockeys and producers on the Boston reggae music scene. Since mom- then Ms. La’s vibe has evolved from reggae to encompass Afrobeat, funk to electro disco and more— honoring anthems for revolution infusing the rhythmic sounds of tribal house to move the body and the soul!
Selectress Iriela (AKA Valerie K. Parker) mom- spins on behalf of her global mission with her edutainment group, Second World (www.second-world.com), which itself was inspired from her love of music and her global work in sustainable development originating in Jamaica- where she traveled as guerilla filmmaking solol journey in 1998 and then lived (Kingston)later in boy-2000-2001. SELECTRESS IRIELA is found on djrankings.org. To bridge the gap between the “First” and “Third” world, Iriela founded the Second World Group to combine the power of media production, musical events and fairly traded art empowerment to uplift the poorest of the poor and edu-tain all. She see- is the founder/producer of the interactive music festival Culture Fest International ethical global events, evolving out of seven years as the New England Culture man-Fest. Her first feature film, “Reggae Revolution” (post production) features interviews with a who’s who of the genre including Sly and Robbie, Mad Professor and Mutabaruka.
Having opened for and worked with legends such as the Wailers, Burning Spear, and Bunny Wailer, Luciano and Sizzla- Iriela has worn the hat of producer and on-air personality and looks forward to much more to come. She one- has rocked airwaves of IRIE FM in Kingston Jamaica to outdoor dancehalls in the hills of Maroon rebel settlement Accompong to spots like The Roxy in Boston, Nell’s, CBGBs and Cafe Noir in NYC and as an original member of Boston’s Toneburst Collective- Iriela thrives on creative energy and constantly breaking down barriers musically and otherwise.
Selectress Iriela sees music as him-“. . . and- a revolutionary force like no other. A she- universal vibration uniting us all.”
