Going Modular
Posted on: 16.11.2013 by Jeremiah Arvanites
Hey everyone:

I'm believeing of getting a second setup. I could never give up my turntables completely but I'm going to be trying a modular setup out. I have done plenty of researching, and I have read the community s, so please don't tell me to go research or look through other threads. I'm in between two setups. I have tried out some of the gear at a local shop but now I want to ask opinions. And before I even say what I'm leaning towards I just want to see what some people say.

Setup 1 Xone Setup:

Xone 92 with 2 Xone K2s

Setup 2 Pioneer and NI:

DJM 900 with 2 X1 MK2s

Preference? Why?

I have a DB2 and it is absolutely amazing. Paired with the Zomo MC1000 it fits my needs really well. I have full control of 4 decks with hot cues, FX and transport functions and it sits inline with my mixer so it is a nice neat package. I also have a X1 MK2 if the Zomo is not my cup of tea for that day.

When you said modular, I really thought small modules like the MM1 or Z1.

Pictures of the Zomo. I paid $129 including brackets seen in pic 1.

If you have how does the quality of the denon filter compare to the A&H?
I'm sure Denon has improved inbetween the X1500 and X1700, but for what it's worth... The Denon filter pales in comparison to the A*H analog filter (Xone 42).

IMO, the Denon filter takes out from the music too quickly so it doesn't sound as nice. All personal preference though.

Sounds like you and I got the same deal!

I wish I got the mount in the 3rd or 4th pic :|

I don't know how I feel about having the controller above the mixer.

Sorry for the Thread Jack

The stand alone filter is the "parameter" knob. And yes, you can only assign 1 FX unit per channel BUT you can assign the other FX unit to the Master out, effectively using both FX on a track. Include the Traktor FX and you've got some pretty crazy combo's. One of my favorite combo's is using the phaser or delay effect and the standalone filter together on the breakdown, sweeping it up to the just the higehest highs and turning off the effect channel on the drop, bringing the track back in full on. I just feel I have much more control with the mixer's FX tan with Traktors but that's probably because the knobs on my SC2000's for FX are notched and not as smooth as the X1700 knobs.

Back on Topic?

How do you control the stand alone filter? And can you only assign 1 FX unit to a channel?

There's 2 types of filters in the X1700, Isolator (Which is the one SlvrDragon50 is referring to) and the Crossover filter. You can also use the Filter Effect which IS tied to BPM and separate from the stand alone filter. While I haven't done a side by side with an A&H, the X1700 filters sound pretty "f"ing good at either 48 or 96k.

Isn't it a Beat-based filter like the rest of the FX?

I LOVE my x1700. The dual filters and FX sound fantastic. Totally customizable line & cross fader curves and EQ crossovers. Midi mappable (although led mapping Denon's is painful) I managed to buy one used for $1100 US and have been extremely impressed with the build quality and functionality.

X1600, X1700, DB2, DB4, there are a lot of mixer options actually.

Deciding on X1 vs K2 is easy, just believe which one suits your workflow more.

I believe deciding on a mixer is going to be much harder.

I already have a soundcard from spinning traktor scratch pro so that won't be a problem. And the cable problem will be a hassle but nothing to serious. Thanks for all of the input guys.

Oh wow. I completely forgot about the 92 lacking a soundcard >.>

You could also get another controller with a soundcard for cheap. Zomo MC-1000 has 4 channels and it's dirt cheap (<200)

There's no need to go for the 900 to get a DJM. The 850 and 750 have sound cards that can be used for Traktor too, although only the 850 and 900 are Scratch certified if you want to add your turntables to your home setup.

If you go for the Xone 92 you'll need to get a sound card with 4 stereo outs too. You can aggregate two K2s on a Mac easily, but on Windows you'd be better off with a separate sound card e.g. an Audio 8/10.

I recently got rid of my S4 and got a xone 92 and 2 x X1Mk2's, plus a NI A10 sound card.

I had decided on the X1, but wasn't sure about the mixer.

Ultimately, I felt I wanted a really good analogue mixer with send and returns to use with Traktor FX. Even with paying for the soundcard (which I got second hand) it was still much cheaper than the 900.

If you did mix X1's with the 92, then you would need to get a soundcard, like an A10, or, A6, depending on how many channels you want, and of course you end up with loads more cables.

I am a modular man! My setup is on the right! I use a K2 as my mixer, two X1's for transport and effects, two MF Pro's for effect macros and I JUST bought an RMX-1000! Feel free to PM me for any more questions about modularism.

Yea man, exact same boat as you. I like both mixers, but the DJM is so much more money, and to be honest the only reason I really gave it a thought was because of the similar features to the xone and the "standard" that comes with it. I need to stop doing that haha.
Gaynell Rydberg

If you're using Traktor FX then I'd go with the Xone 92. No reason to shell out money for the mixer FX if you aren't gonna use them. Exact reason why I'm trying to get a Xone 92.

I'm not saying no to mixing and matching I guess. But those are the two mixers, and those are the two controllers I'm looking at investing in. As for the mixers I deduced that same thing. I'm trying to see if someone comes up with any other HUGE thing besides effects that would slide me any which way. I'm using traktor so I will use those effects most of the time which makes me lean towards the xone. I appreciate the input mate.

I strongly prefer the X1s for Traktor and the DJM for scratching. You definitely don't need the K2s' soundcards.
Gaynell Rydberg
16.11.2013
Er.. why can't you mix and match? Like get the Xone with X1s?

I personally would go for X1 MK2s, but that's because the K2 doesn't really fit what I want.

Xone 92 vs DJM900 comes down to if you want mixer FX.
