Is the Midi Fighter 3D completely customizable?

So basically I'm a Max user and used to the customizability of a Monome, and I was drawn to the Midi Fighter 3D because of the pretty colors.

I am a bit puzzled about what I can and cannot do with the Midi Fighter 3D.

What are my options in terms of sending messages TO the Midi Fighter? Can I send messages from Max to do stuff like change colors or trigger lights in different light levels (velocities)?

Yes if you use Max you can send midi messages to control the color/brightness/ and animation type by changing the velocity of the note.
