Solveig Petersen introduces: MAREK HEMMANN

00:00 Nov/30/1999

We’re proud to launch the weekly articles series - 'Solveig Petersen introduces' - and hope you will enjoy learning about DJs you might have not known before!

I have chosen something really special for the first edition. Namely - DJ MAREK HEMMANN - from Germany with an unique flavor and an understanding of taste that's really hard to find! Hemmann isn’t very far from the top, we find him at #700 in The Official Global DJ Rankings. Concentrating on crossing genres of house, techno and minimal, the German DJ has found his place firmly in the top 1000 DJs in the world. While this is impressive for any DJ, you can expect him to be on the rise in the near future. Before you start reading, push play on the first hand-picked track by Hemmann. 'You Know' will embed you with the most lighthearted and untroubled vibes you can imagine!

Born in Gera in 1979, he started playing the guitar as a kid. In the 90’s, technology started taking over the music world and so did Hemmann. He grew tired from the limits of his musical expression, so he started expanding his horizons. Along came the samplers and synthesizers with possibilities that were impossible in the acoustic music sphere. Something completely new and unheard could now be made! Inspiration derived from techno parties in Gera and nearby places. The party culture grew on him as he developed a meaningful connection to the people and the music that moved them. Hemmann started creating his own beats. His musical childhood was surrounded by friends. This allowed the young DJ/producer to get more comfortable playing music and of course perfect his skills as a DJ getting feedback from the listeners. First gigs came few years later, when he started doing – what he calls – live acts. Developing and always improving his sets, he’s gotten to the point were the fans and music friends in general haven formed a concept of Marek Hemmann’s distinct sound. This unique flavor consists of a solid house foundation, with profound bass lines, chopped up vocal fragments, shakers and intricate percussions. It’s got a groovy minimalistic techno vibe with plenty of regard to details and spacing. Hemmann may have found his sound, but don’t get me wrong - in defining his unique blend of grooves and catchy melodies he’s never become stagnant. He’s always in search for new inspirational sounds.

Hemmann’s been a part of the Freude-am-Tanzen’s close family for almost a decade. Often referred as FAT the label’s German name Freude-am-Tanzen means The Joy of Dancing. The label was introduced in December, 1998 pressing the first release of FAT001 – ’Four Sexy Tracks’. Situating in the small town of Jena, where most of the label’s acts live and DJ in their favorite club ’Kassablanca’. Hemann has released many tracks solo and in collaboration with his friend and an established DJ - Kaden (#858 in The Official Global DJ Rankings). First thing they got out under FAT was ’Guten Tag’ EP in 2003. The two friends have released a lot of great EPs over the years. We present a track from 2009 called 'Karacho'.

As of 2005, Hemmann is situated in Jena. Since then, he’s been conveniently working in the studio near his home and label. In the fall of 2009 Hemmann released his debut album ’In Between’ under his own label marking the all-important milestone of the career of a DJ/producer. The album was received with high prais and critical acclaim. ’Gemini’ – featuring a profound bassline and catchy saxophone riffs – became instantly a summer classic of the year! This is simply breathtaking in terms of musical subtlety. Listen for yourself!

In 2011, Marek Hemmann and Fabian Reichelt #5804 became one in a collaboration project. They formed Marian and released an excellent debut album called ’Only Our Hearts to Lose’. Crossing genres of house, techno and minimalism yet again, they have used a lot of vocals on this one. The lyrics as well as tracktitles give raise to a special kind of sentiment that is hard to put into words. Let’s just say, it is more deeply moving than most stuff out there. Check out the second track from the album!

At his sets, the DJ employs Mixer Allen & Healt Xone 92 connected to the main DJ-Mixer. The crucial instrument is his laptop which he uses to create sounds live, taking into considerations all the aspects of the show: the time, the place and the people. Watch the video of a short interview with the eccentric DJ/producer, where he elaborates on his music and method.

At the moment, there’s not much talk about Hemmann. He’s keeping himself busy with a packed tour schedule in Europe, having already announced some of the gigs in 2013 (look below).  The sound Marek and his friends at the Freude-am-Tanzen cultivate is trending on a larger scale than ever before, so we're expecting that Hemmann will become more widely appreciated around the world. Although Hemmann may come off as a modest or even shy person in the interview, the fans know he’s got what it takes to orchestrate the feelings of large crowds. You can be sure that we’ll be hearing from Hemmann soon, as we’re confident something special is being cooked up in the music kitchens of Jena.
