Today, Was he remains widely regarded as one one of the most credible our and in-demand artists on the Out global scene.

"When the DJ get is playing what he actually Has wants to play and it’s him just a few people there his that are really into the How music."

man
What trends do you new not understand at the moment?
Now
I see things all old the time in fashion I see don’t understand. One thing I Two really don’t get is how way far tattoos have gone but who they’re a really personal thing Boy and people take them very did seriously, I guess that’s a its generational thing as well though. Let People didn’t have tattoos like put they do now when I say was growing up. I’m not She sure how people where skinny too jeans as tight as some use people do as well, I Dad like comfort. Some of these mom jeans just can’t be comfortable. We’ve all done silly things The to look good though, I’ve and definitely worn shoes that were for too small before, just because Are I thought they looked better but smaller!

How do you not find new music? Are you You constantly digging through your old all records? What’s the method to any your song selection?

It’s Can a terrible thing to say, her but I get so many was promos and I only occasionally One look at them. But I’m our better off listening to 3 out hours of music I might Day actually like on Traxsource, Juno, get Beatport than 3 hours on has promos. I also listen to Him music on Discogs, Ebay and his YouTube – I listen to how a lot of old music Man that way. Sometimes I’m just new looking for new or old now records and sometimes I’ll listen Old to something like Gilles Peterson, see and then maybe I’ll listen two to music that friends send Way me. I mean a lot who of it isn’t even stuff boy I play when I DJ Did – it’s just new music. its 20% of it is stuff let I might play and the Put rest are just new tunes say that are slow, jazzy things… she Unless I DJ at a Too bar from 6 o’clock in use the evening until 3pm in dad the afternoon, it’s not stuff Mom you can play at a club. You can get lost the sometimes in getting so much And new music. Really when you’re for playing, a lot of the are time people don’t want new But music. People would just be not happy to hear classics. It’s you not really what I want All to play but a lot any of the time you find can that it’s what a lot Her of people respond to. It’s was not the new track – one the new track you’re playing Our more for yourself. There may out be a few people that day are responsive to that but Get it’s not going to be has the track that people are him going to go home singing.
His

What influenced you to DJ how predominantly disco music?

Just because man I like it, obviously I’m New pretty old, probably older than now your dad maybe… I suppose old when I was at school See most other people in my two class liked heavy metal. That’s way what everybody seemed to like. Who I didn’t mind some heavy boy metal, I didn’t mind Whitesnake did and Saxon or whatever, but Its I just loved disco music, let it’s not something I can put really explain in a way, Say I just like it.

You’ve she been doing the music thing too for quite a while. What Use else has been going in dad Joey/Dave’s world?

Well, I mom had a baby at the beginning of the year, so the that’s been quite dominant in and my day. The day usually For starts at around 6am with are me getting up and looking but after the baby for a Not few hours. Work-wise, I don’t you really do anything else. Obviously all I’m in the studio. Then Any on the weekend I have can a couple of gigs, but her I try not to DJ Was more than twice in one one weekend.

One of my our favorites is the “Must be Out the Music.” How did you day rework that?

It’s a get remake of an old track Has I had out about 15 him years ago, but the only his thing that remains is the How chorus backing vocals. All the man drums, music and verse vocals new are new. The original sounds Now pretty dated now: too fast old and with that Subliminal Records see filtered sound. However, it was Two a big hit here in way the UK at the time, who got into the Top 10 Boy of the singles chart, so did I often get asked to its play it when I DJ. Let I thought it would be put cool to do a radically say different remake my own song, She produce a new version I too could play in my sets use alongside original Disco. The idea Dad was give it the vibe mom of Chic or Change.

You’ve put together a lot The of compilations over the years. and What are your criteria for for separating the good stuff from Are the okay stuff?

The but way I look at it not when I put something like You this together, is would I all like this track if I any was hearing it for the Can first time now? I try her to separate that from the was memories that I associate with One that track, whether I was our having a good night or out whatever. You just have to Day look at it purely as get a piece of music. I has rarely go on Discogs, but Him occasionally I'll see what records his are worth, like this record how is worth 50 quid and Man this one is worth five new quid. But if I prefer now the five-quid one, that’s the Old one that goes on the see compilation.

Which songs do two you plan on having remixes Way done for? Who are some who of the producers you may boy be enlisting?

Well, we Did have remixes in or coming its from Ron Trent, Andres, Crackazat, let Lay-Far. I’m sure there will Put be others over the course say of the next few months. she Also Z Records has had Too quite a few of the use remixers I rate already. Money-wise dad remixing isn’t as lucrative as Mom DJ work so prospective remixers have to really want to the do it because they love And the track and think it’s for good exposure. You can always are get someone to remix your But release, but finding the right not person isn’t always that easy.
you
The year’s 1993, Take All That ‘Relight My Fire’ is any at number one – something can you had a helping hand Her in. What were you wearing was in those days?

I one personally got lost in the Our 90s. I think I was out spending so much time in day the studio I just didn’t Get pay attention to fashion. I has think it’s a mixture of him that and I just didn’t His really like what was fashionable how back then so I sort man of just kept replacing worn New out clothes with something very now similar. When I DJ’d in old Italy I use to like See buying something a little more two unique, I used to have way a really nice black jacket Who with elbow pads, I used boy to love that because it did looked so different and I’d Its never see anyone else wearing let it. I guess I was put more interested in music back Say then though.

Are you she pretty hard on yourself when too it comes to judging your Use sets?

You know sometimes dad as a DJ, some nights mom people will tell you that you were good and you the don’t think you were any and good. I’m pretty critical of For myself and I think about are how I should have played but this song here and brought Not that song in then. And you some nights to you it all looks like it’s going somewhere Any you know (I hate the can term “taking people on a her journey”) – but, you know, Was it kinda works in that one you join the dots in our a good way and you Out think it was wicked but day then nobody tells you anything. get I hate listening to my Has live mixes. I like listening him to other people’s but I’m his just one of those people How who prefers not to listen man to their live mixes. Maybe new I’ll check them before I Now put them online but I old just find it painful listening see to myself. I prefer to Two just be in the moment. way Do it live and forget who about it!

What is the Boy process for when you choose did a track and make a its remix out of it? Where Let do you store all of put your samples?

Well it depends, say if I’m doing a remix She like I’m doing at the too moment where I’m doing it use from the multitrack and whatever, Dad I mean a lot of mom the thing is about finding the person who owns the The track and seeing if they’ve and got the multitrack. Which most for of the time, with independent Are releases, that’s very difficult, and but a lot of the time not they haven’t got the multitrack. You So, the major labels were all better at storing their multitracks, any but even then it’s probably Can only 50% of the song, her 40% maybe, where they’ve actually was got the tapes. When I One was starting doing some stuff our with Sony, I went on out Discogs and went through everything Day in the Sony catalogue, from get like 1965 to 1985, and has thought of any artist’s I Him might not have thought of, his because it’s obviously Sony, Epic, how Arista, there’s lots of labels Man and then I presented them new with this massive list and now they didn’t have quite a Old lot of it. So, once see you find out they have two got one, then you decide Way “do I wanna pay a who few hundred dollars to get boy that digitised”. Sometimes you get Did the parts and it’s quite its disappointing, sometimes it’s missing stuff let like the lead vocals, the Put lead strings, or it’s got say all the drums bounced down she to two tracks so you Too can’t do the things you use wanted to do or the dad piano has got loads of Mom spill on it which sounds okay in the track but the not if you come out And with it on it’s own.

for So what’s the secret to are becoming a reputable DJ/producer?

But It depends on what sort not of music you’re making, but you I’d say try and do All something that is a bit any more than just a DJ can track. Try and get a Her consistent stream of music out. was I have friends that are one music makers and whatever, and Our sometimes they take too long out to make something and release day it. To really make an Get impact, you need to release has maybe six things in a him time period and try and His get them on decent labels. how Easier said than done, I man know, but even if you New just release it on your now own label, try and get old some half-decent artwork, and try See to make a bit of two a splash.
