A Sit Down With DJ Daddy`s Groove
Daddys Groove has been ranked as 97th in DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Ranking. The duo was at Sound Museum VISION in Shibuya, Tokyo last year and has done a wonderful show gathering loads of fans to the club. Daddys Groove is also one of the artists to be receiving support from the one and only David Guetta. He created a buzz playing their track Back To 94 featuring Cimo Fränkel released by Spinnin Records at big festivals.
"One of the most important things is to always be on the look-out for fresh young talent; to sign artists who we think will make a big impact on the market with their innovative sound."
Would you describe your sound as characteristically Italian? How would you best describe the essential Italian sound?
As I said before, the background of each of us has enabled us to get the sound of Daddys Groove. House sound that blends melodies with often potential to crossover plus groove sometimes on house sometimes on Techno based. We always have a maniacal attention on the sound! At the end of the day we are pretty fair from an Italian sound, we spend most of our time around traveling and touring so we get the best we can from all over.
What is DJ Mag to you as a DJ and producer?
It's always been a kind of 'reference' about what is happening in the biz, also something we look at for discovering big talents in the production context that maybe we missed for some reasons!
Whats your take on the current rise of dance music internationally especially in the USA? How do you see it evolving and in turn, how do you see Daddys Groove evolving with it?
Its a really new and exciting thing for us really. Up until now, Europe has always been invaded by American artists. Very rarely did we see any dance music artist make any real lasting impression in the States. But now, it seems there has been a complete turnaround. European artists are having a huge impact on the dance music scene internationally. It is really interesting and exciting to see the States become very receptive to the Electro sound, even if it does seems to be solely based on Swedish House Mafias sound at the moment. Of course we hope that they will become more interested in a wider range of house music artistically we wouldnt want stray too far from our roots. But at the moment we cant say how long it will last but we are happy that there is now a lot of business and opportunities for us over there.
How is the clubbing scene in your native Naples?
As always its really good! There is so much raw talent there that the scene is constantly evolving and this is really exciting for us. We were lucky having Angels of Love bringing down the best DJs in the world, it has been a great inspiration.
Speaking of Ibiza, over the years, you have become regulars at David Guettas F*** Me Im Famous at Pacha. What is your favourite aspect of performing at Pacha and why?
Yes, Ive been playing FMIF for four years now. I played also at the SHM Masquerade Motel and I really love to play in Ibiza at Pacha. There are people from all over the world, you can always play new sounds and try your new stuff. And its amazing because there I have the chance to play with the best DJs in the world.
What have been the new frontiers for you this year?
They have been two actually: coming back to Spinnin' Records releasing something we define 'genuine' and 'really close to what we are and what we love', and obviously being part of the DJ Mag Top 100, a great prize of which we are very proud and thankful to the fans!
How do you feel that DJing and producing has changed over the last few years?
In the past it was more difficult for sure. You had to play with vinyl and you had to do that properly! Then to produce you needed big studios and big and expensive machines! Now for the young generations it is more easy, you could do anything with a laptop but on the other hand now the quality has to be much better because there is much more completion all around. Youve to challenge yourself maybe working with such great artists like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and it means also to be a pop star, so its an unbelievable and exciting experience to do.
How do you get the inspiration from when producing music?
Inspiration comes from everywhere: a gig in a club, a track you hear on the radio that has nothing to do with the music you produce, a special kick sample, a dinner out with your family/friends... very often your own culture is the main inspiration.
How does it work in the studio? Do you rely on experimentation? Do any of you have any specific musical talents you bring to the group?
Its interesting really. Despite what some people may think, being a trio is really helpful in the studio. We all have different musical tastes which we think complement each other which makes it fun to experiment with. And its a balancing act really. Depending on the track we are working on at that moment determines whose style has the most influence on its production. And we always have some stuff ready to be developed according to what we are working on.
Do you have any pre gig rituals?
Yes, while we are going to the club we decide together just the first track to play and who of us will start. And then from there well see step by step.
The best gig I did was at Ushuaia in Ibiza, seeing 10.000 guys jumping all night during a big rain was simply amazing!
